Summary

Classic Tales of Science Fiction & Fantasy is a collection of ten novels and short stories written before “science fiction” was officially a genre. Inside you’ll find long-beloved tales of unknown worlds and realms by Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jack London, H. P. Lovecraft and more.

What Worked for Me

The stories included in this collection are truly classics. Looking at the Table of Contents, I realized I’d already read half of the stories, mostly during my younger years when I was forming what became a life-long love of speculative fiction. The leather cover feels luxurious in my hands and the gold-edged pages give the book a high-class appeal. It also includes it own ribbon book mark. How cool is that?

What Didn’t Work for Me

Because there are so many words being packed into one book, the typeface is small … so not the best book for people with aging eyes. Also, the book has some heft, so not a great travel read. This is the kind of book you curl up with in your comfy chair next to the fire.

Conclusion

This book is great for the collector and neophyte alike. These classic science fiction and fantasy tales are beautifully — dare I say lovingly — packaged to delight yet another generation of genre fans. I look forward to discovering the few tales I’ve missed in my fandom career … and perhaps passing the tome on to the next generation.

NOTE: Although I received this book free to review, that did not affect my opinion of the book. Read past reviews of books I’ve received for free and you’ll know I don’t hold my punches.
