What Worked for Me
This book was funny! I laughed a lot while reading it. Good thing, since it is marketed as humor.
Each chapter can stand on its own, poking lighthearted fun at some classic or mythic monster, from the Mummy to Bigfoot to banshees. But to make it more interesting, some chapters build on each other, adding layers to the overall experience of the book.
Although I believe this book is accessible to all, it appeals to those with some decent grey matter between the ears, as well. It makes references to film, myth, and legend that the info-geeks, cinema buffs, and literati-prone will get a kick out of.
What Didn’t Work for Me
I got nothing. I so thoroughly enjoyed reading Sad Monsters … there really isn’t anything I can think of that didn’t work.
Conclusion
Because each chapter is short and pithy, Sad Monsters makes great bathroom reading. It crackles with wit, irony, and sarcasm. Each chapter can be enjoyed on multiple levels. Whether you get the literary and film references or not, you’ll still find a chuckle or more in Sad Monsters.
