Tomorrow is JRR Tolkien Day

JRR TolkienOn Jan. 3, 1892, JRR Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. To celebrate this event, The Tolkien Society invites Tolkien fans around the world to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author at 9pm your local time.

The toast is “The Professor.” And for those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies, the Society has provided these instructions:

“To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words ‘The Professor’ before taking a sip (or swig, if that’s more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.”

They also added this lovely little disclaimer: “The organisers do not condone drinking alcohol if it endangers the health or safety of the drinker or others, or contravenes the law.”

About the author

As The Genre Traveler, Carma Spence loves to view the world through Genre-Coloured glasses. In other words, she sees the world through a lens of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, where trash cans can be Daleks in disguise and neighborhood forests can harbor faeries and sprites. Magic realism is real! Or at least you can choose to see the world that way to add to the fun and awe of life.
